Carhartt WIP Honours Fela Kuti With New Capsule

Legendary musician, political and cultural icon...

Carhartt WIP have teamed up with the Fela Anikulapo Kuti Estate to create a capsule inspired by the late musician and pioneering legend behind the Afrobeat genre.

The graphic capsule collection has been designed in close collaboration with the Kuti Estate, his former manager Rikki Stein and Knitting Factory Records. Inspired by Fela Kuti himself, the line contains a series of bold designs available in colours and patterns sourced directly from Kuti’s legacy.

The Nigerian cultural icon is not only widely celebrated for his political activism, but his groundbreaking musical talents. Combining elements of West African musical styles including fuji music and high life with American funk and jazz influences, Kuti’s Afrobeat had a strong focus on chanted vocals, complex intersection rhythms and percussion.

Carhartt WIP will be honouring Kuti’s legacy with a short film made in collaboration with London-based artist Akinola Davies and rapper Obongjayar. The experimental One Day Go Be One Day film sees the two travel to Lagos together, and takes cues from Fela Kuti’s spiritual roots.

Coinciding with the capsule and film launches on April 4th, the brand will also be honouring Kuti with a limited edition, 500-copy re-release of his now out of print Live in Detroit 1986 album, and a special concert and screening in London, with further events to follow in both Paris and New York City.

Available from carhartt-wip.com, Carhartt WIP stores and selected retailers from April 4th.
