Everyone has their classics, whether you’re the type of person for whom this means picking between a Nike or adidas trainer, or in the market for an A-line denim skirt, courtesy of Gap or Uniqlo; fashion tribes – described as such across the board or otherwise – each bear signifiers.

For first generation skinheads, prominent many moons ago and reinterpreted ever since, classics were by way of Brutus, Edwin, Alpha Industries and Dr. Martens, as the latter’s latest collection confirms.

           

Titled ‘The Spirit of ‘69’, this season Dr. Martens has embarked on perhaps its most elaborative collaboration yet, signing up the aforementioned brands to release specific styles once the object of skinhead desire.

“Ordinary working men reinvented what the ordinary working man should look like,” suggests Mike Skinner of the era, as he voices the accompanying short film. “Swinging London had swung by, it was time to remove the fog lights, the mirrors and the fuss.”

Hence said uniform consisted of the sharp checked shirt, hardwearing indigo denim, fierce MA-1 jacket and sturdy leather boots.

Variations of each style make up the 15-piece collection, while an oxblood leather record box designed with Trojan Records completes the line-up, offering a sincere nod to music’s place within the subculture.
