Angel Olsen will release new album 'Whole New Mess' on August 28th.
The songwriter's superlative 2019 album 'All Mirrors' pushed her right out to the front, one of her generation's most formidable voices.
New album 'Whole New Mess' is seemingly Angel Olsen at her most personal, written in the aftermath of a break up.
She explains: "I had gone through this breakup, but it was so much bigger than that - I’d lost friendships, too. When you get out of a relationship, you have to examine who you are or were in all the relationships. I wanted to record when I was still processing these feelings. These are the personal takes, encapsulated in a moment."
Recorded at The Unknown - a Catholic church in Anacortes, Washington - the album was laid down during a short but intense residency.
"I hadn’t been to The Unknown, but I knew about its energy," she continues. "I wanted to go sit with the material and be with it in a way that felt like a residency. I didn’t need a lot, since it was just me and a guitar. But I wanted someone else there to hold me accountable for trying different things".
The spartan, hugely affecting title song is online now - superbly beautiful, it's a sign of what's to come.
'Whole New Mess' will be released on August 28th.
