Every single move from Skinny Living feels carefully thought through.
Songwriting of real depth, every line - every word, perhaps - has been laboured over, making sure that everything is in its right place.
The Wakefield trio end the year with a new EP, perhaps the broadest, boldest exhibition of their talents.
'No Messiah' is out now, and we've been entranced by the title track, by its gospel leanings and terse lyricism.
Brave and open, it finds Ryan Johnston embracing someone he loves, but someone who is also troubled.
It emerged from a real life dilemma, when he tried to support his younger sister. He comments:
"We were close growing up and I was extremely protective of her but at the time of writing No Messiah she had been going through some serious adult life challenges that I couldn’t get involved in and it made me feel frustrated just watching and doing nothing."
"Growing up, she was definitely the most timid of the three of us, but I can vividly remember some moments where she would break free from that timid character to stand up for herself, those around her or what she believed in and I wanted to remind her of the powerful inner strength that she has to overcome anything. This song is speaking directly to her."
A stunning return, 'No Messiah' comes equipped with a beautifully shot video from director Charlotte Regan.
Ryan continues: "'No Messiah' is a song written from the perspective of someone frustrated with a loved one’s ability to see their own strength. It reaches out to remind them the power they have to make a change. It was clear that Charlotte was the perfect director to bring across authentic real life stories in a way that both suits the song and the band that we are."
