...feels derivative and dull

This is the second single from ex-Beta Band front man Steve Mason’s new incarnation, Black Affair.

It opens with a big lone synth – that may have soundtracked a particularly sinister moment from weird 80’s sci-fi show Sapphire & Steel – which is followed by a measured, methodical beat, some nice electronics and a funk undercurrent that references any overtly electro music, from Kraftwerk to Depeche Mode. While it doesn’t have the stylish touches of previous single It’s Real, this isn’t a bad song. But for a man with such an interesting and diverse back catalogue, it feels derivative and dull.
