'Cool Like You'

“I want to know since you’ve been gone have I been on your mind?” croons Blossoms’ vocalist Tom Ogden on the opening line of their sophomore effort ‘Cool Like You’. Taken from ‘There’s A Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls)’ it’s an apt introduction into the sonic trajectory of the album that sees them put their foot down on the synth-pop accelerator.

Highlights include the lingering bassline that snakes its way through ‘I Can’t Stand It’, the blistering guitar solo (closely followed by Ogden’s coy falsetto) on ‘Unfaithful’ and the distorted dream-like vocal on acoustic number ‘Love Talk’.

The accolade for the most dominant pop anthem has to be awarded to ‘I Just Imagined You’, a track that sounds like ABBA if they frequented 42s in Manchester twice a week.

A steady example of being lovelorn in the 21st Century, matters of the heart are never too far away within Blossoms’ lyricism on the record either and none more so than on the down tempo ‘Stranger Still’. “Love can be misleading when I’m always leaving,” expresses the singer with his heart firmly on his sleeve.

Honing in on the qualities that defined their debut, it’s a not entirely adventurous, but certainly soaring sophomore.
