An engrossing return from the New York group...

‘Shiny New Model’ is the new mini album from New York five-piece, BODEGA. Featuring eight tracks, it follows their critically acclaimed 2018 album ‘Endless Scroll’ and is a critical look at life today.

The album has post-punk, hip-hop, krautrock and folk influences. Title track and recent single ‘Shiny New Model’ is an analysis of the modern world. The themes explored include the sadness of modern consumption. “You will be replaced by a shiny new model,” we are told.

‘Knife On The Platter’ is an infectious and fun track, as are many of the others on the album (“History will laugh at your lazy, hip, smug fatalism”). There are two reworked versions of ‘Truth Is Not Punishment (from ‘Endless Scroll’)’; one of which is over 10 minutes long. The guitar solos are riveting and impressive.

Tracks are upbeat with meaningful lyrics. Ben Hozie is the lead vocalist, while Nikki Belfiglio takes lead vocals on ‘Domesticated Animal’; another entertaining track. The tone is satirical and mocking at times (although they are songs you can sing along to) and the sound is undoubtedly contemporary.

BODEGA’s mantra is “the best critique is self critique” and it is a message that is well conveyed throughout this album.

7/10
